League Rules of Play


Basketball

  • In regards to the actual rules of play all WIAA rules are observed in athletic contests, unless the league has determined otherwise .  League Directors will keep athletic directors informed of any rule changes.  

  • All schools are responsible before, during and after a contest for the proper Christian sportsmanship of their coaches, athletics, students, and other spectators.

  • Schools will hire WIAA approved officials for Girls A, Girls B, Boys A, and Boys B games.

  • Officials are to paid a minimum of $25.00 per A team game.  For A-team tournament games, officials will be paid $25.00 per game. 

  • Large Division:  A player cannot play more the 3 halves in a night, and may not play one week “A” team and the next week “B” team.

  • Seventh graders can play in only one tournament.  (Either the B tournament or A tournament).  If they choose the A tournament they must have played on the A team during the year.

  • Sixth graders may play with their school’s A team in the tournament if they have played with them during the season.

  • Sixth graders may play in the entire B tournament and then also in the A tournament, but will be limited to 1 half/game in the A tournament.  The converse is also true, they may play in all  the A-team tournament, but will be limited to 1 half/game in the B-team tournament.

  • Small Division:  5th and 6th graders may play in the entire A-team tournament and the B-team tournament if they have played regularly in the games at both levels during the season.

  • Home team wears white tops, and visitors wear dark colored tops when possible.

  • Time Periods:

    • Large Division & Small Division

    • A-team games (Two – 14 minute halves)

    • B-team games (Two – 12 minute halves)

    • Timeouts – 3 full / 2 – 30 sec. 

  • There will be a running clock after 25 points starting in the second half. When point differential reaches 10 points resume normal timing until a 25 point differential occurs.

  • If the game is tied at the end of regulation play, a 1 minute break shall be taken, and a 3 minute overtime period shall be played, more if needed.

  • Large Division:  A team boys will use the regulation men’s ball

  • Both Divisions: A and B team girls and B team boys will us the regulation women’s ball (28.5). (2015)

  • The 3-point line will be used for all teams in both divisions.

  • Pressing is allowed in both A and B team contests at both large and small school levels.  Christian sportsmanship shall prevail in all situations.

  • Method of weekly scores and standings is up to the league directors.

  • The team/teams in or tied for first place in the A-team divisions at the end of the regular season will receive the league championship trophy/trophies.

  • B-team Free Throw Courtesy line – a designated line 2 feet in front of regulation line. 

  • Tournaments hosted the Saturdays before Winterfest need to start after 10:30 am.


Soccer

  • Weeknight games will begin by 4:15 with a minimum of 10 minutes to warm up.

  • (Schools should make arrangements if this is not possible.)

  • Halves shall be 35 minutes in length with a 5 minute half time.

  • It is desirable to have a WIAA registered referee engaged by the home team, but not mandatory.  Should this be unattainable, the law of Christian love should prevail, and an arrangement mutually agreed upon by the two schools involved be used.

  • The visiting team shall supply one line judge to watch for out of bounds.

  • Teams should field 11 boys/girls in grades 5-8.  If this is impossible, grade 4 may be used.  If this is still impossible, the law of Christian love should prevail, and a mutually agreed upon number shall be used.

  • Soccer Ties-In the case of a tie at the end of regulation timE

    • an overtime period of five minutes will be played

    • if game is tied after the overtime period a shootout will be held. (2015)

    • The head referee shall choose the goal at which all of the penalty kicks from the penalty line shall be taken.

    • Each coach will select any five players, including the goalkeeper, on or off the field (except those who may have been disqualified) to take the penalty kicks.

    • A coin toss shall be held. The team winning the toss shall have the choice of kicking first or second.

    • Teams will alternate kickers.  There is no follow-up on the kick.

    • Following five kicks for each team, the team scoring on the greatest number of these kicks shall be declared the winner.

  • If the score remains tied after each team has had five penalty kicks:

    • Each coach will select five different players than the first five who already have kicked to take the kicks in a sudden victory situation, wherein if one team scores and the other team does not score, the game is ended without more kicks being taken.

    • If the score remains tied, continue the sudden victory kicks with the coach selecting any five players to take the next set of alternating penalty kicks.  If a tie still remains, repeat 7a.


Volleyball

  • Weeknight games will begin by 4:15. (Schools should make arrangements if this is not possible.)

  • Warm-ups

    • 2 minutes shared court by both teams with no net play

    • 4 minutes home team has court for net play, visitors warm up behind them off court.

    • 4 minutes visitor team has court for net play, home team warms up behind them

  • Volleyball matches include both an “A” team and a “B” team.

    • (If a school has a “C” team, then games should be scheduled separately.)

  • All matches at all levels will consist of three (3) games. (Rally Scoring)

  • Rally Scoring 3 sets. All sets are played to 25 points, win by two.

  • Start of the Match: Beginning of the match, players start on their respective end lines. When referee blows the whistle, both teams run up to and along net and shake hands.

  • End of a Game: At the end of a game, both teams return to the end line. Referee confirms score, blows whistle. Hosting school will determine whether or not teams will switch sides.

  • Before the first game the referee will call captains to center court and the visiting team captain will call the coin flip. After the second game, referee will callcaptains to center court (other team members wait at their end lines and bench members stay at bench), and the referee will have coin flip for serve andside of 3rd game. The coin flip will be called by the home team captain.

  • Rotation on First Serve: Non-serving team should begin one rotation back and then when they gain serve, they would rotate into their first serve.

  • WIAA rules shall be followed unless otherwise specified in the League rules.

  • Serving Rules

    • A Teams will follow WIAA rules.

    • 6-7 graders (on a B team or below) would follow these rules:

      • A designated line five feet in front of the standard service line will be used.

      • Schools must mark this measured line on their court.

      • Overhand service will be allowed in front of the standard service line.

      • To encourage proper skill development with the overhand serve, all players using an underhand serve must serve from behind the traditional service line.

      • 5 graders and under would follow these rules:

      • The 3 meter line (10 foot line) will be used as the service line.

      • Coaches are to use discretion, and move their players back to their appropriate service location on the court based on ability. 

      • Underhand or overhand serves may be used.

    • Foot fault is enforced at all levels and will adjust depending on the rules stated above.

  • Volley-Lites will be used for all B and C level matches.

  • It is desirable to have a WIAA registered official engaged by the home team, but not mandatory. Should this be unattainable, the law of Christian love should prevail, and an arrangement mutually agreed upon by the two schools involved be used.

  • FVWAL league champions will be awarded their trophy(ies) at before tournament play at the league invitational tournament.
